John Watts, Minister for Railways and Roads, today welcomed the sale
of British Rail's O.B.S Services business to a management buy out
team.

O.B.S, formerly On-Board Services, supplies food, drink and catering
products to train operators, and undertakes some retail services on
board trains.

Welcoming the sale, Mr Watts said:

"This is a significant sale. Products and services supplied by O.B.S
are important ingredients in many people's trips by train.

"This sale demonstrates that the process of rail privatisation is
well under way. Freeing the business from the constraints of public
ownership will bring new and broader opportunities for the company.
This is very good news for O.B.S's customers and employees alike".

A number of organisations had expressed interest in buying the
business, which employs about 650 staff around the country. The
business last year posted a turnover of about #30m and is being sold
as a going concern.

NOTE TO EDITORS

1. O.B.S is one of several BR support businesses to be sold in
recent months. These include the sale in July of Baileyfield
Switches and Crossings Works, Edinburgh, and, last month, the sale of
Ditton Timber Treatment Works, Widnes. BR plans to sell about 20
other support businesses by the end of the financial year.
