UK gets #22 million from Europe for Trans European networks
The United Kingdom is to receive #22 million from Europe in funding for Trans European Network schemes in 1995, the Secretary of State for Transport, Sir George Young has announced. The funding package agreed is the largest of all the Member States. Welcoming the news, Sir George said: "I am delighted that the United Kingdom is to receive #22 million from Europe. The money will go to transport projects on strategic routes across the country and represents over 15% of the total funds available for priority projects in 1995. This is more than any other Member State will receive from the EC fund and reflects the UK's significant share in the TENs priority projects." Funds will go to the following projects: *#7 million for the West Coast Main Line *#13.6 million to the Channel Tunnel Rail Link *#1.6 million for schemes along the Ireland-UK-Benelux Road Sir George added: "The UK will also receive #360,000 for road traffic management research and has an interest in a number of other traffic management schemes, including a Global Navigation Satellite System, which will together receive some #16 million of TENs funding in 1995." Notes to Editors 1.For West Coast Main Line, Channel Tunnel Rail Link and Ireland - UK -Benelux road link, money will go towards feasibility studies. For the other projects, the funds will go towards development costs including feasibility studies. 2.Sir George Young was responding to a Parliamentary Question from Mr Richard Tracey MP (attached). 3.The development of trans European networks (TENs) is provided for in Article 129c of the Maastricht Treaty. The funding of the transport TENs was provided for in a Financial Regulation adopted by ECOFIN on 18 September 1995, replacing the Transport Infrastructure Fund. The Financing Regulation makes provision for the 1995 funds to be allocated to "specific projects of a priority nature". Of the 240 mecu total funds available in 1995, 182.1 mecu were allocated to the 14 priority projects identified by the Essen Council, and which include the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the West Coast Main Line and the Ireland- UK-Benelux Road Link. Mr Richard Tracey (Con - Surbiton): To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what will be the United Kingdom's share of the funds available in 1995 for priority projects under the European Community's financing programme for Trans European Transport Networks. SIR GEORGE YOUNG Priority projects in the United Kingdom will receive some #22 million, which is just over 15% of the total funds available for priority projects in 1995 and more than any other Member State will receive from the EC fund. In addition to the #7 million for the West Coast Main Line, which I announced in the House on 18 October, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link will receive #13.6 million and schemes along the Ireland-UK-Benelux Road Link will benefit from #1.6 million. The UK will also receive #0.36 million for road traffic management research and has an interest in a number of other traffic management schemes, including a Global Navigation Satellite System, which will together receive some #16 million of TENs funding in 1995.
