The Government is to publish a transport strategy for London in the
New Year.

The announcement was made today by Transport Secretary Sir George
Young in answer to a Parliamentary Question from Richard Tracey
(Surbiton).

Commenting, Sir George said:

"The document will set out the Government's strategy for the future
of transport in London into the next Millennium and will build on the
work being published today by London Pride.

"This work has shown that there is now an impressive consensus about
transport policy in London, embracing the business community, local
authorities and transport operators. The Government shares in that
consensus and is aiming to produce a document which will have the
widest support.

"I have asked Steven Norris to take forward the preparation of the
document taking into account the views of London Pride and others.

"In the meantime, I very much welcome the positive line taken by
London Pride and the fact that it endorses much of what the
Government is doing."
