“Rail sale signals success of privatisation” – Watts
John Watts, Minister for Railways and Roads, today welcomed the sale
of Signalling Control U.K. Limited to Westinghouse Brake and Signal
Holdings Limited.
Signalling Control U.K. Limited (SCUK) is one of BR's two signalling
project businesses and a key player within the railway signalling
industry. SCUK provides a wide range of specialist design,
consulting, contracting and project management services - advising
the rail industry on all design aspects of signalling infrastructure
including renewal and replacement.
Commenting on the sale, Mr Watts said:
"This is a significant sale in its own right and signals the
continuing success of rail privatisation. SCUK's workforce has
extensive knowledge of existing British railway signalling systems
and has the expertise to develop new systems both here and abroad.
"Over twenty rail businesses have now been sold, demonstrating that
the private sector is prepared to invest in the railway industry. The
shape of the future rail support industry is clear - private sector
companies delivering high quality services, which will ultimately
benefit the passenger. This sale demonstrates the progress being made
in privatising rail consultancy and support services."
A number of organisations expressed an interest in the business,
which is based at five sites across the country. SCUK employs around
600 staff. SCUK has been involved in contracts for Great Eastern
re-signalling, the Manchester airport rail link, Carstairs
interlocking replacement and major works associated with the channel
tunnel route.
NOTES TO EDITORS
1.SCUK formed part of BR's Central Services group, a collection of
about 20 diverse businesses providing support services to the rail
industry. BR's other signalling project business, Interlogic Control
Engineering, was offered for sale in May and BR are currently
assessing the bids received for the business.
2.Previous Central Services sales include the Baileyfield Switches
and Crossings Works, Ditton Timber Treatment Works, and Quality &
Safety Services Limited.
