Sir George Young welcomes rail safety report

Sir George Young, Transport Secretary, today welcomed the Railway
Inspectorate's annual report which showed that the number of
significant train accidents on the Railtrack network fell by 8 to 110
in 1994/95.

Welcoming the report, Sir George said:

"This is good news. It shows how safe the newly restructured network
is. Railways are the safest means of surface transport and serious
trains accidents are relatively rare. Railtrack has a robust safety
management system endorsed and regularly monitored by HSE. I am
delighted that they have today confirmed that standards of safety on
the railway remain as high as ever."

Other statistics from the report include:

*total fatalities on the British Rail/Railtrack network in 1994/95
fell to their lowest ever level.

*Number of incidents of signals passed at danger reduced by 75 from
905 to 830.

*Number of BR trains running into buffers decreased from 31 to 21.

*The number of people killed falling from train doors was the lowest
ever recorded at five compared with eight last year.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. Total fatalities on the BR/Railtrack network excluding trespassers
and suicides were at 32 in 1994/95.
