Final BR signalling business sold
Sir George Young, Transport Secretary, today welcomed the sale of the Interlogic Control Engineering business to ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation (Signal) Ltd, formerly ABB Signal Ltd. Interlogic Control Engineering (ICE) is the second and last of BR's signalling project businesses to be sold. It is a key player within the railway signalling industry providing project development, system engineering, testing, commissioning and project management for new signalling and control systems. ICE also has particular skills in the design and interfacing of new and existing signalling systems. Commenting on the sale, Sir George said: "This sale completes yet another chapter in the rail privatisation process with both BR's signalling businesses now moving into the private sector. Only last month, the first three passenger franchises were awarded to private sector companies - I expect this momentum to continue with more rail businesses due to be sold in the coming months. "I believe that as we start to see more parts of the railway industry successfully sold to the private sector, rail customers will begin to see further real improvements in Britain's railway system." ICE has offices in Reading, London and Birmingham and employs about 420 staff. The company has been involved in a number of major projects in the course of the last financial year, including Mersey Rail - replacing 28 signal boxes and level crossing boxes with an integrated electronic control centre and the resignalling of the line from Paddington station to Hayes. NOTES TO EDITORS 1.ICE formed part of BR's Central Services group, a collection of about 20 diverse businesses providing support services to the railway industry. 2.BR's other signalling project business, Signalling Control UK Ltd was sold to Westinghouse Brake and Signal Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of BTR, on 1 December. Other Central Services sales include Baileyfield Switches and Crossings Works, Ditton Timber treatment Works, Quality and Safety Services Ltd, Railways Occupational Health Ltd.
