Norris gives go-ahead for new station at Kirkby in Ashfield on Robin Hood Line
Local Transport Minister, Steven Norris, today gave the go-ahead for
work to begin on a new railway station at Kirkby in Ashfield on the
Robin Hood Line in Nottinghamshire.
This follows the Governments decision to provide a further #3.1m to
cover cost increases during construction of Stage 2 of the line. This
increases the Governments contribution from #6.5m to #9.6m.
The additional money will also allow Nottinghamshire County Council
to let the contract for the construction of the Kirkby in Ashfield
station which the Council deferred last year.
Speaking about the decision, Mr Norris said:
"This is good news for Nottinghamshire and those people who are now
using the Robin Hood Line between Nottingham and Mansfield Woodhouse.
The news will be particularly welcomed in Kirkby in Ashfield where
the money will enable the station there to be completed.
This demonstrates the Government's commitment to public transport
and its wish to see the Robin Hood Line a success."
Robin Hood Line train services operate betweeen Nottingham and
Mansfield Woodhouse, a distance of almost 19 miles. The service was
inaugurated by the Secretary of State for Transport, Sir George
Young, on 10 November 1995 and regular services commenced on 20
November.
NOTES TO EDITORS
1.Robin Hood Line Stage 1 services began between Nottingham and
Newstead in May 1993. Stage 2, which opened on the 20 November 1995
and extended services to Mansfield Woodhouse, has involved the
reconstruction of cuttings and embankments and new railway track at a
cost of just over #20m.
2.The scheme has been promoted by Nottinghamshire County Council who
have also managed aspects of the project. Railtrack have been
responsible for upgrading trackwork and signalling.
3.Three new stations - Sutton Parkway, Mansfield and Mansfield
Woodhouse - opened on 20 November 1995. The fourth station, at
Kirkby in Ashfield, deferred because of a shortage of funds, will now
go ahead.
