I welcome the independent HSE investigation into this tragic, but
extremely rare, accident.

HSE has already received proposals from the railway industry in
response to the recommendations. In particular, agreement has been
reached to improve the procedure for fitting the bolts which secure
the fuel tank, and to improve the resistance of the plumbing pipes.
Discussions have also commenced on emergency procedures and
equipment.

"Travel in this country by train is over four times as safe as travel
by bus and 15 times safer than travel by car. Railways remain one of
the safest forms of transport, and serious accidents are relatively
rare."
