Sir George Young requests investigation into rail crash
Transport Secretary, Sir George Young, today asked for an independent investigation, under the Health and Safety at Work Act, into last Fridays rail crash at Stafford. Sir George said: I have asked the Health and Safety Commission to ask the Health and Safety Executive if they will carry out an independent investigation and prepare a special report which will be make public as soon as possible. In the meantime, Railtrack and the train operator, as well as HM Railway Inspectorate are already carrying out technical investigations to see if there are any immediate lessons to be learnt. Sir George Young, who was kept briefed over the weekend on the rescue and recovery work, has extended his sympathy to the relatives of the postal worker killed, and to the injured, and thanked the emergency services and all those involved in the rescue operation.
