John Bowis appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport
John Bowis OBE was elected Member of Parliament for Battersea in 1987. He has been an officer of the backbench Employment, Education, Arts and Inner Cities Committees. He has served as a member of the Select Committee on Members' Interests and been active in parliamentary groups for transport, disabled people and various international areas. He was Vice Chairman of the All Party Social Science Group. He has been National Vice-President of the Conservative Trade Unionists and President of the British Youth Council. In a lighter vein, he was for twelve years in the cast of the fund-raising 'Blue Revue', a Director of the London Actors Theatre Company and Board Member of the Royal National Theatre. He was formerly advisor to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers and the Association of Colleges of Further and Higher Education. In October 1989, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon David Hunt MBE MP, supporting him in his role initially as Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, and, from May 1990, as Secretary of State for Wales. In June 1993, John Bowis was appointed Under-Secretary of State for Health. His outside interests include walking, the arts, sport and travel. Mr Bowis is married to Caroline. They have three children.
