Tram concession award provides boost for South London
London Transport and Tramtrack Croydon Limited, with the agreement of the Secretary of State for Transport, today signed the Concession Agreement for Croydon Tramlink. Work can now commence in earnest on the 99 year concession to design, finance, build, maintain and operate the Croydon Tramlink System whose 28km light rail network links Wimbledon, New Addington, Beckenham and Elmers End with central Croydon.
Project Director, Clive Hodson said: "I am pleased to say that the concept of a modern attractive, environmentally friendly, fast, efficient mode of transport appearing on the streets of South London is to become a reality.
Clive Hodson continued: "By the year 2000, Tramlink will play its vital role in the South London economy creating many new jobs during construction and some 250 permanent jobs thereafter. As well as the employment benefits, Tramlink will improve the attractiveness of Croydon and surrounding areas to business, commerce and retailing.
Tramlink will ultimately benefit the local community by improving east-west travel links and by offering motorists an attractive alternative to the growing problems of traffic congestion in the area."
Tramtrack Croydon comprises CentreWest, Sir Robert McAlpine, Amey Construction, 3i, Bombardier Eurorail and The Royal Bank of Scotland.
Throughout construction and operation, London Transport is responsible to manage the Concession Agreement and monitor operations. The commercial risks of the system remain with the Concessionaire.
