New Transport Police station for Hammersmith
A new £2.6 million police station to help fight crime on the Tube was opened at Hammersmith today. It represents a major investment in the safety of Underground customers in west London.
The new station is the most modern of eight British Transport Police stations covering the London Underground system.
Peter Ford, London Transport’s Chairman, speaking at the opening ceremony, said: "This is a first class example of how London Underground meets its responsibilities in doing everything in its power to make the Tube a safe place to be. We are always grateful for the eternal vigilance of the British Transport Police who patrol the system. Crime on the Underground, especially theft, is on the decline, and with the opening of this fine new facility which will be a base for 32 officers I am sure that trend will continue."
The new premises include a purpose-built interview and custody suite, offices and medical facilities, parade and briefing rooms as well as mess facilities for up to sixty officers. As well as the uniformed staff there will be three detectives and two dog handlers.
Thefts account for two thirds of reported crime in the Hammersmith police station area and in the last year these have been reduced by a quarter to 1,034. Overall, crime in Hammersmith fell by 22% in the year with assaults, vandalism, vehicle crime, burglaries, fraud and drug offences all down.
