Clapham South station award for 60 year face lift
Clapham South, one of the first Underground stations completed under the Northern Line redevelopment scheme, has received the Ian Allan National Railway Heritage Award 1996.
Work began at the station in June 1994 and was completed in December 1995, giving the station it's most comprehensive refurbishment for almost 60 years.
The work restored much of the station, including external stonework, ceramic flooring, internal wall tiling and external frontages. Internally, the station now boasts a new ticket hall, a refurbished escalator shaft, enhanced CCTV, mirrors, public address equipment, Help Points, a new station control point, plus improved lighting throughout and a Cable Management system.
Originally called Nightingale Lane station, Clapham South opened in 1926 as part of the Clapham Common - Morden extension of the Northern Line. The Charles Holden concept and theme for this group of stations was a design of striking green and white platform tiling, Portland stone external wall facing and concrete canopies, with perimeter down lighting.
Under the redevelopment, restoration work was regularly reviewed by London Underground, English Heritage and the Local Planning Authority to ensure that many of the original features were reproduced for the stations undergoing modernisation in the group.
