Forty-one-year-old Richard Middleton is to be appointed Railtrack's new Commercial Director.

A professional railwayman, who began his career as a management trainee, Richard Middleton is currently Director of Railtrack's York-based London North Eastern Zone. Before that appointment in August 1996 he held a similar post with the East Anglia Zone.

Announcing the intention to appoint Richard Middleton to the board, Railtrack Chairman Sir Robert Horton said: "Richard is one of our young, dynamic managers with the combination of a thorough knowledge of the railways and an entrepreneurial flair. This combination will provide the exciting drive we need as a new company that is embarking on a massive change."

Richard Middleton said: "Having been part of the railways for 20 years, I see the next decade as a huge opportunity to revitalise the industry. It is an exciting new era for the railways and I see myself as playing an important and critical role as Railtrack continues its drive forward as a customer focused organisation."

The date on which Richard Middleton will take up his new position will be announced later.
