Railtrack to invest over £100m in local station regeneration programme
Over ?0m [[£100m?]] will be invested in local railway stations during the next four years as part of a massive national station regeneration programme unveiled by Railtrack today.
On the first anniversary of its privatisation, Railtrack, the national track, signal and station owner has embarked on a ?billion regeneration programme for 2,500 stations throughout Britain.
At a launch in Derby Railtrack Property Manager, Ted Nuttall released details of the programme to boost the quality of Midlands stations by 2001.
"378 stations in the Midlands will benefit from this programme. ?0 million will be invested in local stations to repair damaged buildings, roofs and footbridges, improve passenger information systems, enhance facilities and provide a more pleasant physical environment for customers."
Specific plans for each station were developed following detailed surveys that highlighted areas in need of improvement. Teams have now been employed to implement maintenance, renewal and backlog works with the necessary commercial developments.
Priority projects in the Midlands include Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. Work at these stations will begin in the summer of this year and is expected to be completed within 12 months.
Railtrack is working closely with local train operators to ensure minimal disruption to passengers using the station during the works.
Speaking at the national launch at Paddington Station today, Railtrack Chairman Sir Robert Horton spoke of Railtrack? long term commitment and vision for railway stations throughout Britain. "With privatisation freeing the company from public sector constraints on spending, Railtrack is set to achieve its vision of working with its industry partners, customers and suppliers to deliver the best commercial railway in the world. When you think we own over 32,000 km of track, 40,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and 9,000 level crossings not to mention the stations themselves, our regeneration programme represents a significant investment."
