“We are getting on with the job” - Railtrack's response to Rail Regulator's statement
While it is too early to comment on the Regulator's announcement in detail, Railtrack is pleased to note his positive comments on the Network Management Statement, published in February, as "an important step forward" in demonstrating the Company's commitment to planning and future investment.
The company is also pleased to note the Regulator's comments on its commitment to the Thameslink 2000 project, the improvements on the West Coast Main Line, the improvement to the processes for the approval of rolling stock safety cases and the 10-point plan in the development of rail freight.
"Yesterday Railtrack committed itself to the £1 billion station improvement plan on the same day that we reached only one year in the private sector," said Chairman Sir Robert Horton. "That station improvement project is part of our commitment to spend around four million pounds a day - £16 billion in 10 years - on improvement to the whole of Railtrack's infrastructure.
"We are getting on with the job and delivering on our promises - 300 stations will be refurbished by the end of this year and new track and signalling schemes are coming on-stream all over the country.
"I have personally given an assurance that we will spend the money wisely and as speedily as we can to create the best railway in the world," added Sir Robert.
Already, he said, the railway is performing better with the train operating companies ordering new rolling stock and Railtrack pressing ahead with its investment programme.
"Now that the rail industry is settling down and working well as a positive, forward-thinking body it would be a great shame if this was disturbed or thrown off course at this juncture," he said.
