Railtrack announces £1 billion tender for track renewals
Railtrack PLC is inviting tenders for up to £1 billion worth of work on track renewals and associated haulage it announced today.
Companies are invited to put forward tenders by 26 August and it is anticipated that the contracts will be let in October 1997 with work starting in May 1998 and running to 2002.
The four year contracts will have options for extension to seven years, subject to performance, and will be based on the Institution of Civil Engineers Design and Construct form of contract.
Brian Mellitt, Director of Engineering and Production said: "This is the first time Railtrack has been able to competitively tender this work for more than a one year term following the sale of the track renewal units from British Rail.
"This particular style of contract has been chosen to offer companies a greater opportunity to work more closely with us and present their options for effective programmes.
"We will also be looking for opportunities to improve the use of the time while the track is closed by using new technology and better possession management.
"The existing contracts agreed while the companies were in the public sector, are due to expire in 1998. By going out to tender now Railtrack is aiming to establish long term relationships with its future key suppliers.
"We expect the tenders will stimulate interest from contractors in continental Europe as well as the companies which acquired British Rail track renewal capabilities," he said.
Railtrack owns the railway infrastructure which includes 32,000 km of track. The company has started an intensive programme to renew 2,500 km of rail, 5,500 km of sleepers and 6,000 km of ballast over the next 10 years. It is anticipated that the workload in the initial years will increase as the inherited arrears of work are eliminated.
This latest announcement forms part of Railtrack's plan to spend £16 billion on the railway infrastructure in the next 10 years.
