Double entendre?
Thanks to Poems on the Underground, commuters will soon be able to practice their French as they go about their business.
Appearing in both French and English, the poems "Rondel" by Charles d’ Orlean and "Le Faune" by Verlaine, will be posted from 15 June along with: Lines from "An Essay on Man" by Pope "Cargoes" by John Masefield "Waiting for rain in Devon" by Peter Porter "Wedding" by Alice Oswald
The new set of poems follows the successful launch of the famous poetry series on the World Wide Web (at: www.netpoems.com), providing a sea of poetic calm for frantic Internet surfers all over the world. The new Poems on the Underground Internet site, sponsored by Syntegra, increases the number of ways poetry fans can enjoy the poems featured in all 37 sets since 1986. Poems on the Underground anthologies, published by Cassell’s, are available from the London Transport Museum shop in Covent Garden and all good book shops. Posters of the individual poems are also available from the London Transport Museum shop and the Museum runs a subscription service for poem posters (both new and previous poems).
The poems used in the series are selected by Judith Chernaik, Gerard Benson and Cicely Herbert with layouts by Tom Davidson. London Transport pays for the production costs and advertising space. The programme also receives financial support from the British Library (Stefan Sweig Programme), London Arts Board and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
