Red and yellow and pink and green...at all participating London Underground station gardens
Flower power is back thanks to the London Underground. The Station Gardens competition has the expert judging panel touring the Tube to find the best gardens across the system.
The first round of judging started last week to decide which of the 30 stations entered will become winners of the four main categories in this year’s competition.
Judging takes place in three separate rounds, and the final (which is also round three) takes place in August. Participants can enter as many categories as they wish and each category is judged on pre-set criteria.
The four categories in the competition are : Tubs, Hanging baskets, New cultivated gardens and Mature gardens. In addition, there is a special award for the Best Overall station garden winner.
Director of Passenger Services, and one of the judges, Hugh Sumner, said: "This is one of the most popular events on London Underground’s calendar and is reflected in the enthusiasm shown by staff at participating stations. Each year, it gets more and more difficult to judge the entrants, with standards reaching new heights, but it’s an enjoyable and thoroughly worthwhile aspect of London Underground’s day to day station operations, and something in which everyone - customers as well as staff - can enjoy."
Station staff care for the gardens in their own time, with London Underground providing funding for seeds and plants. Winning stations are presented with a cash award and a framed certificate, with a Challenge Trophy Cup awarded to the Best Mature garden. All runners-up receive a cash award and a framed certificate. The formal award ceremony will take place in November.
