Railtrack investing £8 million in the Cardiff Valleys
Over £8 million is about to be spent on new track in the Cardiff Valleys to improve reliability and punctuality of the train services and ensure the long term future of the lines.
The work, which starts this summer, will include replacing wooden sleepers with steel ones, replacing unwelded rail with continuous welded rail and raising the speed limit on some sections of track from Cardiff to Methyr, Radyr, Rhymney, Cwmbargoed, Aberdare and Treherbert. The work is scheduled to be completed in 1999.
Railtrack Director, Andy Hancock, said: "This multi-million investment will enable faster journey times, a smoother ride and improve the reliability of the line.
"This investment demonstrates Railtrack's commitment to maintain and develop the network. It will provide an excellent incentive to encourage more customers to travel by rail,'' he said.
