Railway golfers raise £2000 for children's charity
date 1 July 1997 source Railtrack plc type Press release
Wimbledon might have been rained off but last weeks appalling weather did not stop rail industry golfers from raising £2000 for a children's charity.
Around 100 players braved the downpour last Friday to play 18 holes at Great Hadham Golf Course, near Bishops Stortford.
The event, organised by Railtrack and Great Hadham Golf Club, raised funds for the Round Table Children's Wish charity.
The competition was won by a team from local train operator West Anglia Great Northern Railway, captained by their managing director, Bishops Stortford resident David Burton.
A rain-soaked Michael Holden, director of Railtrack East Anglia commented: "There was no way that we were going to let a drop of rain put a dampener on our day.
"The money that we raised will be used to grant wishes to terminally ill children and I think that getting a soaking was a very small price to pay for the benefit that it will give to these youngsters".
