Plans for environmental improvements and energy conservation across London’s Tube and bus network were announced today by London Transport. They include:

Working towards 100% use of ultra-low sulphur fuel on all bus routes.

o Metering electricity by location and setting savings targets, in addition to obtaining electricity from more energy-efficient sources.
o In-depth research into noise and vibration on the Underground.
o Establishing targets for waste reduction.
o Establishing a methodology for appraising environmental impacts in new developments.

LT’s Environmental Performance Report, published for the first time, describes recent achievements in managing the environmental impact of LT’s activities and identifies areas for further improvements in the future.

Peter Ford, LT Chairman, said: "London Transport plays a part - sometimes minor, sometimes major - in the lives of practically every one of the millions of people who live, work or spend leisure time in London. We are proud of this role, and very conscious of our responsibility to address the many impacts that London Transport has on the environment.

"We hope that this first environmental report has shown that, in achieving continuous improvement, we have advanced on many fronts and also that we have practical plans to tackle the work there is yet to do.

"The report must be viewed alongside another impact - an environmentally beneficial one - of London Transport’s business: that of providing Londoners with a less polluting, more energy-efficient alternative to travelling by car."

The Environmental Performance Report focuses on London Transport’s role in the development of the capital and its approach to environmental management. In addition, LT’s performance and future goals are discussed in a number of key areas including air, energy, noise, effluent and groundwater, waste, land contamination and habitat.

A downloadable version of the Environmental Performance Report, in pdf format, will be available on the London Transport web site in a few days.
