Challenge Anneka? Not quite, but Railtrack volunteers are up against the timetable as they bid to refit a shelter for Blackburn's young homeless.

As part of its Partners In Sharing scheme, the rail custodian has teamed up with Business in the Community to launch a series of projects, offering help and support to charity groups and organisations nationwide.

Bernard Travis, Public Affairs Manager for Railtrack in the North West explained: 'Big businesses have a responsibility to give something back to the community and Railtrack is no exception. With the help of Business in the Community, we now aim to do this by utilising the skills of our workers in a variety of projects that will benefit all concerned.'

Helping to lead the way are a ten strong team from the North West, who, minus the catsuits, will be testing their hidden DIY talents to refit and refurbish a shelter and day care centre for 16-25 year-olds, run by Blackburn charity Nightsafe.

Work will include fitting a new kitchen and cupboards, decorating the rooms, touching up brickwork, laying new carpets and maintaining the gardens.

Amongst the volunteers is signalman Malcolm Rowley, who is lever-ing it all behind to carry out a plumb job at the Jubilee Street hostel.

'I've actually been a signalman for 45 years so it will nice to try my hand at something different like plumbing, particularly for such a good cause as this,' said Malcolm.

Also lending a hand will be fellow Railtrack staff Jim Myers, Mark Delaney, Mark Bradley, Shaun Rigg, Brian Flynn, Farooq Khan, Caroline Madej, Bernard Travis and Nigel Barber.

North West companies EBM Builders Merchants Limited, Barton Grange Garden Centre and G&G Carpets are also backing the project, with generous donations of worktops, tiles, kitchen units, shrubs, plants, carpet and linoleum.

Commented Nightsafe's Manager Paula Kaniuk: 'This is a wonderful gesture by Railtrack and everyone else involved and will help us to continue to provide first class care and support for those homeless youngsters on the streets of Blackburn.'
