A new contract designed to simplify the charging structure for 80 per cent of Britain's rail freight business was signed today by Railtrack and freight operator English Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS).
The new contract will help to develop the growing rail freight market and will secure much of Railtrack's freight income for the next four years.
Richard Middleton, Railtrack's Director, Commercial said: "This is a further step towards encouraging even more freight on to the railway. Last year saw the first increase in rail freight traffic for 15 years and this new deal will help the industry build on that positive trend."
Randy Henke, EWS' Marketing Director said: "This agreement enables EWS to respond quickly to changing customer needs and this will help us grow the business through a simplified structure."
The contract has been ratified by the Rail Regulator following consultation with the rail industry.
