Summer is now in full swing, and not to be outdone, station gardens entered in the London Underground Station Gardens Competition are now looking their best for the finals.
The second round of the competition was held over 15, 16, 17 and 18 July to decide which of the 30 stations would go through to the finals.
Standards were so high that sixteen of the stations got through to the final round and winners will be decided at the end of August.
There are four categories in the competition: Tubs, Hanging Baskets, New Cultivated Gardens and Mature Gardens. In addition, there is a special award for the Best Overall Station.
Runners-up to the final round received merit certificates and a cash prize. As stations were able to enter more than one category, First Class Merits have been awarded to 16 entrants and a further 18 received Second Class Merits in individual categories.
Hugh Sumner, Director of Passenger Services, and one of the judges for the finals said: "I believe there will be some difficult decisions to be made, as standards of entries are very high. Everyone will receive a recognition for the effort they have made for this year's competition. The finalists have still got some work to do and I'm looking forward to the judging in a few weeks' time."
Station staff care for the gardens in their own time, with London Underground providing funding for seeds and plants. Winning stations are presented with a cash award and a framed certificate, with a Challenge Trophy Cup awarded to the Best Mature Garden. All finals runners-up receive a cash award and a framed certificate. The formal award ceremony will take place in November.
