Railtrack is set to invest £1.6 million in keeping the Heart of Wales open with refurbishment work on eight bridges on the Central Wales Line, running from Llandeilo Junction (Swansea) to Craven Arms (Shrewsbury).

Railtrack's Jim Shiels said of the scheme : "This investment programme is an important step forward in safeguarding the future of the line in Wales. The repairs will give the bridges a further 100 years of life."

At Garth, next to the A483 and B4519, work to the masonry arch include waterproofing and the installation of tie bars. Waterproofing will also take place along with repairs to the masonry arch at Builth Road, adjacent to the A470.

The structure at Llangunllo, which lies on the B4356, will involve the replacement of the existing bridge with a precast concrete culvert. Llangammarch, south of the A483, will have general masonry repairs to the three span masonry and brick arches.

The bridge at Howey Hall, on the A483, south of Llandrindod Wells, is due to be waterproofed and generally repaired. The replacement of the existing cast iron superstructure with a new concrete deck is the focus of the work at Penybont which lies at the junction of A44 and A488.

Llandrindod Wells will have the existing timber deck replaced with a new concrete super structure, and finally Lower Hall Farm, near Knucklas on the B4355, will have masonry repairs to the sub-structure and steel repairs to the deck undertaken.

Contracts are being let for the work and it is anticipated that work will start at the end of the year.
