Railtrack appoints independent chairman for Southall enquiry

John Ellis (age 59) has been appointed to start work tomorrow (Monday 22nd September) as the independent chairman of the railway enquiry following the Southall rail crash on Friday 19th September 1997.
Previously Managing Director at Scotrail until April 1997, he has held a wide variety of demanding general management positions in different parts of the rail network for the last 14 years. As Production Director at Railtrack from April 1993 to March 1995, he was heavily involved in the creation of the new railway organisations.
David Rayner, Director Safety and Standards at Railtrack said: "I am pleased that John is able take on this role. It is vital that this important enquiry is led by the right calibre of chairman and John's experience will ensure that this tragic incident is fully investigated."
