A new guide listing over 150 local and regional rail user and action groups

was published today at the 19th National Conference of Rail Users in London.

The guide, commissioned by the Office of the Rail Regulator and edited by Peter Lawrence of the Railway Development Society, lists rail users' consultative committees, RDS branches, line user groups, line or station re-opening campaigns, public transport action groups, other lobby/research organisations and rail transport alliance groups.

In a foreword, John Swift, the rail regulator, says :"The effective operation and regulation of the railway depends on an active and strong voice for passengers and users. The railway industry is unique in having available to it an extensive informal network of rail user groups".

"This Directory is aimed at promoting the voice of rail users by bringing together in one place comprehensive information about the work and concerns of local rail user groups. The aim is to help to ensure that individual groups are better known and to enable railway managers and policy makers to identify the people they need to consult about the development of rail services and the network as a whole."

Copies of the "Directory of Rail User Groups" are available from Sue MacSwan, ORR Library, 1 Waterhouse Square, 138-142 Holborn, London EC1N 2ST. (Tel: 0171 282 2001; Fax: 0171 282 2045; E-mail: orr@dial.pipex.com).
