Railtrack PLC is pleased to announce that it has commenced its tender review for plain line track renewals. Three preferred bidders have been invited to further develop their proposals for three particular packages of work covering Great Western zone, London North Eastern Zone and Midlands/North West Zones. A number of companies have been asked to re-submit proposals for the work in Southern Zone and East Anglia zone and the award of the contract for work in Scotland has been deferred.
The preferred bidders are Fastline for Midlands/North West and London North Eastern Zone and AMEY for work in Great Western Zone. Secondary bidders have been held in reserve on all the contracts until the final negotiations are agreed.
The contracts are due to commence in May 1998 and run until 2002. Brian Mellitt, Railtrack's Director Engineering and Production said that the contracting industry had responded well in the initial discussions for plain line track renewals. Of the three contracts where preferred bidders have been identified he said: " It is early days but we are confident of making progress. The form of the contracts allows Railtrack to vary the method and timing of work to suit the needs of our customers, the train operating customers."
Railtrack is responsible for Britaim's railway network which covers 10,000 route miles. The company plans to spend more than ? billion over the next ten years of which ?billion involves track renewals.
