£5 million to be spent on improvements to Kingsferry bridge
Work to carry out improvements to Kingsferry bridge, linking the Isle of Sheppey to the mainland, will be carrried out by Railtrack over the next eighteen months.
This ?5 million project will be funded jointly by Railtrack and the Highways Agency and will improve the bridge for both road and rail users.
The importance of the link is clearly recognised and disruption will be kept to a minimum, with any closures being where possible centred around the night time quiet period.
The first element of work will take place over two weekends in January 1998, (10 - 12 January and 31 January - 2 February) and will involve the renewal of 24 steel ropes, two inches in diameter.
These works are being undertaken in conjunction with locally involved organisations including, Medway Ports Ltd, Emergency Services and local authorities to ensure the maintenance of essential services to the Isle of Sheppey.
These works will involve periods of full and partial closure of the bridge, and be undertaken, on the same basis as previously planned closures.
The main objective of this future programme of work is to maintain and improve the reliability of the bridge and to carry out improvements to match the requirements of the users.

Kingsferry bridge, the only fixed link between the Isle of Sheppey and the mainland, was constructed in the late 1950s and currently is managed and maintained jointly by Railtrack and the Highways Agency. The bridge carries both the railway and the A249 trunk road and has a lifting span which, when raised allows the passage of shipping within the Swale.
