Improvement work to start at Laindon and Tilbury town stations

Improvement work, worth over £1.5 million is about to start at two south Essex stations as part of Railtrack's station regeneration programme.
At Laindon a £670,000 spend is just about to get underway. New waiting shelters and improved lighting is being installed, and the work will also include repairs to station buildings and footbridge. Toilets are to be refurbished and platform three is to be resurfaced giving improved disabled access. The island platform building will be reduced in size and smartened up.
Tilbury Town station will be benefitting from a £870,000 rebuild. A brand new station building will be constructed which will incorporate a disabled toilet facility. A new footbridge will also be provided.
Both stations will remain open as normal during the work, which is due to finish next summer. The benefits will include enhanced station buildings and footbridges, improved platforms and better disabled facilities.
Railtrack director Michael Holden said "We are working with our train operator colleagues to improve all our stations and these two projects are some of the first in our enormous investment programme.
"Our ultimate aim is to provide the travelling public with stations which enhance the start and finish of every journey", he added.
The projects are part of Railtrack's £1 billion regeneration programme. Over 2500 stations will be refurbished over the next five years.
