Railtrack has completed work today on a brand new level crossing in Ammanford as part of a new road development funded by the Carmarthen County Council.

The new level crossing will replace the current crossing several hundred yards along the freight only, single track line which will be used by pedestrians only.

Railtrack was awarded the £470,000 contract by Carmarthen County Council in November 1996 and it was then awarded to Amey Railways in March this year. Workers started on site in July 1997.

Railtrack's project manager Gary Oakes commented: " This work is part of an important development for the town and we have been working closely with Carmarthen County Council for a number of months on this project.

"Ammanford crossing is typical of level crossings in this area and will be operated by the train driver of the freight train who stops the train ahead of the level crossing before activating the crossing barriers and the miniature warning lights manually. As soon as the train has passed the crossing the barriers rise allowing cars and pedestrians to cross".
