The Deputy Prime Minister has asked the Franchising Director, John O 'Brien, to investigate options for providing additional passenger capacity on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh.

The Franchising Director will examine capacity issues on the route and consider all the options for accommodating passenger growth, including the investment case for the provision of new or additional rolling stock and infrastructure improvements.

The exercise will involve discussions with the Great North Eastern Railway Ltd (GNER), Railtrack PLC and other passenger and freight train operators as appropriate.

Other interested parties will also be consulted, including the relevant local authorities, Rail Users ' Consultative Committees and Passenger Transport Executives.

The report and conclusions are expected to be ready for presentation to ministers in the Autumn.
