Rail Regulator, John Swift QC, today welcomed the publication of the Government's White Paper A New Deal For Transport, and its associated Response to the Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee A New Deal for the Railways.

Commenting on the proposals for Railways, Mr Swift said: "This is a critically important statement of Government policy for the future of transport in general and for the contribution which railways can and should be making. Today's Statements helpfully clarify the way in which the new Strategic Rail Authority will set out Government strategy and expectations in supporting the railway. They also clearly endorse Government support for the important continuing role for an independent Rail Regulator to balance and sustain a public/private sector partnership in the railways.

"By these Statements, the Government is recognising the value which independent regulation can add, and has added, to improving services on the railways.

"I look forward to working with Government - and with the industry and representatives of users - to bring about the changes envisaged in a manner which promotes the success of railways in contributing to the nation's transport needs. I recognise that the changes the Government proposes to introduce will take some time to bring about. In the meantime I and my Office are pledged to continue to work hard in the interests of passengers and freight users and to seek, by effective regulation, to offer better services for them."
