A Rail Summit on 25 February to kick-start a long term improvement of standards across the railway network was announced today by Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott. The Summit, to be hosted by Mr Prescott, will include passengers' representatives as well as the rail industry.

Replying to a Parliamentary Question from Ann Clwyd MP, (Cynon Valley), Mr Prescott listed the initiatives to improve rail services taken since November 1997, including those agreed at his recent meeting with the industry.

Mr Prescott said:

"On 26 November last year the Minister of Transport and I met
all the passenger train companies and Railtrack to discuss the
continuing performance problems and to thrash out a plan for
immediate action. This included 800 new train drivers, 500 new
vehicles and a new national passenger survey."

Referring to the agreement for a wider-ranging Rail Summit in February to identify ways of getting longer term improvements, Mr Prescott added:

"Today I can announce that the Rail Summit will be held in
London on 25 February."

The Rail Summit will be at the QE2 Conference Centre. A wide range of organisations will be invited, including passenger and freight train operators, Railtrack, local government representatives and Rail User Consultative Committees.
