Last autumn’s train performance shows little overall improvement
date 11 February 1999 source OPRAF type Press release
Third quarter performance figures for the 25 passenger train operating companies, were published by Franchising Director John O’ Brien today.
Commenting on the results, he said:
“Reliability of the service has improved in the quarter, but punctuality is still disappointing.
“There is some evidence that the rate of decline in punctuality has continued to slow, with 28 route groups improving over the year compared to the 19 reported in the last bulletin (when comparing the same routes as previously published). However punctuality remains poor and was still down compared to the previous year.
“Autumn is traditionally difficult for operators, and there was some exceptional flooding this year, but these results are not good enough, and year on year results do not yet point to a widespread improvement in performance.
“Nevertheless, I am aware that the industry is collaborating well to fulfil the undertakings it gave to the Deputy Prime Minister at last November’s performance conference. I expect these to be amplified at this month’s Rail Summit.
“For this report, I am introducing a new system of grading which gives an indication of the comparative level of performance of each route group and train company against criteria for punctuality and reliability. This provides further useful information on the overall performance of the network and I hope that all the companies will strive to improve their standing in the table.”
