Following a competitive tender, the Rail Regulator, Chris Bolt, has today appointed W S Atkins Management Consultants to undertake an independent assessment of the railway industry’s Year 2000 Compliance state.

Commenting on the appointment, Chris Bolt said:

"It is important to have a clear picture of the railway’s state of readiness. Appropriate compliance and contingency plans need to be in place and, if necessary, corrective work must be undertaken to enable the railway to continue to provide safe and efficient services into the Millenium. Passengers and rail freight customers want assurances that services will not be subject to any material problems caused by the date change."

W S Atkins Management Consultants will provide an overview of the current state of Year 2000 management processes and business awareness across the industry including the passenger and freight train operating companies, Railtrack, and the Association of Train Operating Companies. They will also review the compliance programme management of the industry-sponsored body the Rail Millennium Programme Office. Their study will provide an interim report for the Rail Regulator in time for the Government’s Action 2000 Forum on 21 April 1999.
