Britainís rail companies will be running 213 extra train services a day this summer compared with last summer.
The new summer timetable, published today, also reveals that more than 1,200 new services a day have been introduced since privatisation.
During the currency of the new timetable, from 30 May to 25 September, trains will cover a total of 790,283 miles per weekday, a 3.2 per cent increase on summer 1998
Among the many new or improved services being introduced are:
Anglia - doubling the off-peak service frequency between Norwich ñ Liverpool Street to give a half hourly service all day, introducing an hourly service on the Ipswich - Felixstowe line;
Central Trains - increased frequency of services between Leicester and Nottingham and Nottingham and Lincoln;
Connex South-Eastern - faster journey times to Ramsgate and Dover by splitting trains at Faversham;
First Great Eastern - four trains per hour from Liverpool Street to Ipswich; Great North Eastern - extra Saturday night/Sunday morning services; Midland Mainline - doubling the number of services - 10,000 more seats per day and new London St Pancras-Barnsley and London St Pancras-Burton on Trent services; Northern Spirit - extra fourth train per hour on trans-Pennine route via Huddersfield; South-West Trains - increase from three to four trains an hour on Waterloo-Portsmouth and Waterloo-Southampton routes;
Virgin West Coast - Extra Euston-Birmingham and Euston-Manchester trains
The new services show the dynamic rail industry looking for new ways to attract passengers to rail and make the most use of the network,î said George Muir, Director of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC).
This has been successful in recent years with 7 per cent growth in passenger numbers a year. We hope to see further growth in the future and look forward to further investment in capacity to meet demand.
