Eclipse fever has reached such a pitch that almost all the extra 11,000 seats put on for rail passengers travelling to the West Country have already been booked in advance, say the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC).

ATOC Director George Muir said: "We have increased capacity on most routes by the maximum possible, but despite managing to run extra trains, we may not be able to satisfy everyone who turns up on the day."

Passengers intending to travel by train to Devon and Cornwall to watch the eclipse next Wednesday are advised to call the reservation offices before travelling:

First Great Western: 0345 000 125 or the Eclipse Phoneline: 0845 60 10 573
Virgin: 0345 222 333
Wales & West: 08457 125 625
