Commenting on the Health and Safety Executive Railway Safety Statistics Bulletin 1998/99 released today, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) safety spokesman Terry Worrall said: "We are concerned at the increase in Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs) but efforts are being made to address this issue.
"The industry is committed to installing the Train Protection Warning System on all trains and at key locations across the network by 1 January 2004 and train companies have set up special working groups which are working closely with Railtrack to address the issue. In addition, TOCs are continuing to build on good driving practices.
"We welcome comments by HSC Chairman Frank Davies that there were good trends which included no passengers being killed in train accidents and a 25 per cent drop in the number of people accidentally killed on the railways. Railways are the safest form of land transport."
