Commenting on the Health and Safety Executive Railway Report today, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) safety spokesman Terry Worrall said: "The rail industry is working very closely and co-operatively with the HMRI to reduce the number of Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs). Efforts have been underway to reduce SPADs since before privatisation.
"Train companies have set up special working groups that work closely with Railtrack to investigate why drivers pass red signals and recommend actions that prevent such incidences happening again. We are building on good driving practices, improving driving techniques and implementing Government Regulations that will see the installation of the Train Protection Warning System by 1 January 2004.
