Train operators surprised some Labour supporters by strongly endorsing the setting up of a Strategic Rail Authority and Commission for Integrated Transport, at the Labour Conference itself.

ATOC Chairman, Ivor Warburton, present at the Labour Conference, said: "We see the SRA as an engine for growth, a strategic body that lend a more long-term vision driven by wider transport and environmental priorities. It's not a big stick; it's a big opportunity. We back it.

"We know there is a delay on the legislation, but we can start work in partnership with Government from today.

"The Government wants to see a new partnership, so do we. Let's see that new, positive partnership now. Train operators are ready to help; but we do want to see a more constructive and less antagonistic approach - one that is fairer and better grounded on the facts.

"For the facts show we are already making great progress towards the Government's objectives of increasing passengers, lowering fares and driving up investment."
