Responding to the Chief Inspector of Railways' Report into Tuesday's accident, ATOC Director George Muir said: "I will be conferring immediately with train operating companies to study the report and act urgently on its contents.

"Train operating companies will comply immediately with today's letter from Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate (HMRI) requiring them to brief drivers and to review other systems.

"We also fully endorse the actions required by HMRI's Orders to be taken regarding signals that have been passed at danger."

"In August, the Government directed the industry to install Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) across the network because this will bring the fastest improvement to rail safety.

"The report by Sir David Davies will make recommendations by December on safety systems and we will implement his recommendations."
