Rail industry should be talking about unity rather than industrial action

Responding to the RMT's ballot result today, ATOC Director George Muir said: "This is a time when the industry should be pulling together to deliver a safer railway. There should be no talk of industrial action.
"The new rule changes that have been introduced by Railtrack after consultation with the train companies, Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate (HMRI) and unions, will improve passenger safety. The full reasons for the rule changes were set out in a letter to the RMT from Railtrack on 12 August 1999.
"Under current legislation, we believe Railtrack is legally obliged to implement the new rule changes and we are legally obliged to work to them.
