DLR Link puts Lewisham minutes away from heart of city
Half a million people living in South East London and North Kent today get a new shortcut to central London and Docklands, and a new link to the Dome - thanks to the brand-new Docklands Light Railway Lewisham Extension, opened today by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.
The new line, the result of a public-private partnership, is opening two months ahead of schedule. The Government has put an extra £20m into the service to provide new trains to cope with expected demand, and scrapped inherited proposals for a toll - to keep fares low.
Mr Prescott said:
"Our aim is a transport system that is safe, efficient, clean and fair - giving everybody more choice about how they travel. The DLR Lewisham Extension will increase transport choice for over half a million people living in South East London.
"They will benefit from new super-quick travel to central London and Docklands, a new link to the Dome, and new connections to existing transport systems. These will include the new Jubilee Line extension now running through to the West End, and to bus, rail, coach and riverbus services.
"The project has been completed ahead of time - and shows what a public private partnership can deliver.
"We have given the service an extra £20m to get new trains, and scrapped a toll proposal meaning cheaper fares, and more passengers attracted to public transport. People will save £1 per round trip.
"I am confident that the new service will make a real difference to people's lives and give them a real choice about how they move around."
