More people choose public transport in London
Latest figures show that increasing numbers of people are choosing to use public transport to travel in and out of London.
The Minister for Transport Lord Macdonald welcomed the figures which show:
an extra 4% of people (34,000) are now using public transport to travel into central London on a typical weekday during the morning peak compared to last year
people entering central London by car each weekday during the morning peak has decreased by 2% (3,000)
distances travelled by passengers on the Underground throughout London increased by 4% in 1998/99 following the 5% increase the previous year - to the highest level for over a decade, with passenger journeys on the Underground up 12% over the last two years.
Lord Macdonald said:
"These figures show that our policies are working. Public transport is a viable option for increasing numbers of people travelling to and from London.
"We are committed to giving travellers a real choice by creating an integrated transport system.
"We underpin this by providing money to ensure that the public transport system is efficient and reliable – including over £500m extra investment over this year and next for London Transport. The extra £50m awarded this month to LT will speed up bus travel over the next two years, benefiting 500,000 Londoners making return journeys each day.
"The recent opening of the new Jubilee Line Extension is expected to mean that the number of passengers travelling on the Jubilee Line as a whole will almost treble from 58.2m to 135.2m.
"The new Lewisham Link of the Docklands Light Railway gives over 50,000 passengers a day even more choices of travel around London.
"Improving public transport will encourage more people to use it, making a more sustainable transport system, and a better quality of life for us all."
