Rail statistics 1999/2000 - second quarter
Rail passenger patronage maintained its upward trend according to the Bulletin of Rail Statistics published today by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.
The most recent results covered in the Bulletin of Rail Statistics show that, comparing the second quarter of 1999/2000 with the corresponding period in 1998/99:
passenger journeys increased by eight per cent; freight moved (tonne-kilometres) increased by two per cent.
The Rail Bulletin brings together in one publication information available on national railways. It is organised into sections covering passenger statistics, freight statistics, charter performance, Government support, investment and infrastructure. The figures in this Bulletin either cover the period up to end of 1998/99 or to the end of the second quarter 1999/2000.
Notes to Editors
1. The passenger kilometre figures in Table 1 are currently understated. This is because the operators' computerised ticket system is not capturing this information for certain new ticket types. This affects figures for 1997/98 and following years. Following further investigation, revised figures will be included in future Bulletins. The series for passenger journeys in Table 2 therefore currently provides a better measure of the recent increase in passenger patronage.
2. Figures for punctuality and reliability in Tables 4 and 5 have not been updated in this Bulletin because the underlying data for July to October are not due to be published by the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority until mid December. Updated tables will be available on request from that date.
3. Press copies of the Bulletin will be available upon request on 0171 890 4448.
