Operational performance figures for the 25 passenger train operating companies for the second quarter reporting period from 25 July – 16 October have been published today by the SSRA and show encouraging improvement both in performance and in passenger demand.

Some of the key points in the Bulletin are as follows:

Passenger journeys have increased 6% on the same quarter last year
Three operators have moved up a grade, with just one moving down a grade
47 route groups (out of 77) better than last year on punctuality, and 36 better on reliability.
Void days down compared with same period last year
These achievements can be set against a background of an increase of 281 in the number of passenger trains running each day compared with last year.

SSRA Chief Executive Mike Grant said today:

"These results show an overall pattern of continuing improvements in performance, and I am particularly pleased that we now have just three operators in the bottom two grades (D and E), compared with seven a year ago.

"A lot needs to be done to bring the figures up to the level of passengers' expectations, but this is a good start. As we continue with the process of franchise replacement, the commitment of operating companies to improving performance will be one of the key factors in determining outcomes".
