Train operators committed to reducing SPADs

  type Press release

Train operators today voiced their determination to continue reducing the number of SPADs (signals passed at danger). In January 36 signals were passed at danger. This is a reduction of 36% compared to the same month last year. Whilst this is an increase from the December 1999 figure (22 SPADs) it must be stressed that the figures for December were 50% lower than the monthly average for December.

George Muir, ATOC Director General said "We are pleased that the industry's intensive review of driver training is beginning to get results. However, we will never become complacent, and are constantly evaluating our safety practices. The accelerated implementation of the train protection and warning system (TPWS ) over the next three years will help us go one step further towards eliminating SPAD related collisions.
