Britain's train operators today said they welcomed the Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) decision to agree to passenger train operators' suggestion of further talks on the role of the guard, and remain optimistic that an agreement can be reached.

Note to editors In October last year, Railtrack changed rules relating to the role of the guard. One of the most significant changes was that, in the event of a train breakdown, under the old rules both the driver and guard were required to work on the track. Under the new rules, the driver works on the track, whilst the guard stays on the train looking after the passengers. Other significant changes clarify how the driver and guard should respond in the event of a train accident.
